The Unfinished Obelisk

Aswan was the source of ancient Egypt’s finest granite, used to make statues and embellish temples, pyramids, and obelisks. The large unfinished obelisk in the Northern Quarries has provided valuable insight into how these monuments were created, although the full construction process is still not entirely clear. Three sides of the shaft, nearly 42m long, were completed except for the inscriptions. At 1168 tonnes, the completed obelisk would have been the single heaviest piece of stone the Egyptians ever fashioned.

How lucky were we! Found out on arrival at Cairo that it was just the 2 of us in our group. Max our guide and “the rock” our driver were a wealth of information on everyday life in Egypt as well the amazing history . 2 ladies let loose in Egypt and we loved every bit of it. Well worth the early morning starts. If I’d suggest anything I’d recommend a one way train trip and fly the other, just to feel a little more rested in our old age! Couldn’t fault the guides who were always polite and would go out of their way to assist you. Would do it all over again!

We have seen a lot in a short time. The organization has worked excellently, always everything was prepared and besides the guides was imi background always the tour guide available via whatsapp. Many highlights in a short time and then something Enstpannen on the Red Sea: quite great. The only downer was that we did not know that we had to distribute a prescribed amount of tips at every turn. This does not correspond at all to our Western European way of doing things, so we would have needed more precise instructions and, above all, a hint from the organizer. This made the whole thing a bit stressful.

The 10 day tour was amazing and loved the experience particularly as two of us had a guide for the whole trip to ourselves and they were both extremely knowledgeable and taught us so much about Egyptian history and it wouldn’t have been the same without that knowledge. Also both guides were so lovely and helpful and funny and made our time there something to always remember. Thanks to them a memory to treasure
